Industry 4.0 – Moving from Blueprint to Factory Floor: Metsolar Co-Hosts the 3rd EMPOWER General Assembly

Can Europe rebuild a hyper-resilient, world-class solar manufacturing sector from within?

It absolutely can.

The momentum to establish a secure, localized, and highly advanced photovoltaic value chain in Europe is accelerating. Bringing that vision closer to industrial reality, Metsolar, alongside our co-hosts at the Applied Research Institute for Prospective Technologies (Protech), recently hosted the 3rd General Assembly of the EMPOWER Horizon Europe Project at our manufacturing facility in Alytus, Lithuania.

The event convened a massive delegation of Europe’s leading PV technology developers, toolmakers, and core industry players for a high-intensity series of technical updates, strategic workshops, and collaborative discussions.

“The energy throughout the assembly was exceptional. Bringing together researchers, equipment developers, software engineers, and manufacturers under one roof created exactly the type of fast-paced collaboration Europe needs to accelerate not only industrial innovation, but fast-track implementation aswell.” – Metsolar CEO.

Hardware, Machinery, and High-Stakes Testing

Moving beyond theoretical frameworks, the assembly focused squarely on tangible solutions, physical machinery, and rigorous testing methodologies.

On the second day of the visit, the focus shifted directly to the factory floor. Metsolar’s production environment became the central staging ground for showcasing:

  • Advanced Industry 4.0 Solutions: Demonstrating both currently deployed and upcoming automation tools designed to optimize production efficiency and manufacturing intelligence.
  • Back Contact (BC) Integration: Showcasing the practical implementation of next-generation BC technology straight into scaling, flexible and high-throughput manufacturing setups.

Bridging the Gap Between Blueprint and Running Machinery

What matters most in the current European landscape is not just the engineering concept, but the velocity at which disruption moves from a blueprint to actual running machinery.

Throughout the intensive sessions, ultra-talented technology and industry minds worked in parallel across machine integration, specialized tool design, and durability testing. This collaborative cross-functional workflow provides a clear indicator of where European PV manufacturing is heading: smarter, faster, and completely localized.

Technical Highlights & Milestone Progress

  • Industry 4.0 Tooling: [CEO Input Needed: Briefly describe 1-2 specific automation tools or software tracking solutions that were demonstrated or discussed during the workshop.]
  • BC Cell Integration: [CEO Input Needed: Provide a brief technical update on how the integration of Back Contact cells onto the line is progressing or what specific manufacturing challenges were addressed.]

Industry 4.0 Solutions

At Metsolar, participants were introduced to our ongoing Industry 4.0 developments, including production traceability, digital process monitoring, and manufacturing data collection systems designed to improve quality control, operational efficiency, and production transparency.

BC Technology Integration

Metsolar also showcased ongoing work related to Back Contact (BC) technology integration, including next-generation stringing approaches, manufacturing process adaptation, and industrial implementation strategies aimed at enabling efficient and scalable production of high-performance BC-based modules.

A Shared European Effort

Hosting an event of this magnitude underscores the strength of open-access R&D and unified industrial cooperation. We extend a massive thank you to all consortium partners who traveled to Alytus and brought their dedication to these intensive engineering sessions. With this level of pace and engineering expertise, the sky is truly the limit for domestic European PV supply chains.

We also want to extend a special thank you to the Institute for Energy Technology and their team, for their invaluable contribution, steadfast support throughout the assembly, and outstanding work coordinating this complex, multidimensional industrial project.

About the EMPOWER Project

The EMPOWER project is funded under the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation program. It aims to drive the development of advanced, sustainable, and highly efficient PV manufacturing processes within Europe by uniting leading research institutions, technology developers, and industrial manufacturers.
